Welcome to St John's Primary School
Welcome to St John’s Primary School and Nursery.
St John’s is a school at the heart of the community of South Benwell, Newcastle. We are a school which was judged to be good by Ofsted in October 2018, where every child is encouraged to achieve their very best. Children here make good progress and leave us well equipped to succeed in their secondary education. Our school has grown significantly in recent years and has an excellent reputation in the local area.
We offer full-time education for children in Nursery from the September after their third birthday, as part of our expansive Early Years Unit for 3-5 Year olds.
Everyone at St John’s is proud to be a part of our school. This is a happy, vibrant place to learn – we aim to give children the skills for life and a wealth of memorable experiences. The way we deliver our curriculum is a bit different - we use an approach called Mantle of the Expert to bring learning to life, putting drama and imaginative inquiry at the core of what we do. Our children tell us that learning here is fun, that behaviour is good and that they feel safe. Everyone who visits our school comments on the positive atmosphere; the polite, friendly and smiling children and the welcoming and engaging staff. We all work hard and our children make better than expected progress, but we have fun and enjoy what we do. We passionately believe that primary school should be the best years of your life – we want it to be so for all of our children.
Beyond the classroom, we offer a wide variety of clubs for children and courses for parents. We encourage parents to learn new skills; from cake decorating and cooking to numeracy, literacy and ICT skills. About a third of our children come to school early for our free breakfast club and many stay behind for after school clubs such as football, gardening, sewing, ICT, art, dance and drama.
Sport plays a big part in our school – we compete regularly in inter-schools competitions and take pride in our successes. Our school grounds were recently extended to provide all-weather facilities which are available for community use and have allowed us to extend our provision during evenings, weekends and holidays.
I take great pride in being the head teacher at St John’s. Enjoy browsing our website and seeing us in action - especially our class blogs. If you require a paper copy of anything on this website, please let the school office know and it will be provided free of charge.
Willow had great fun on the snow with Key Stage One this morning! #schooldogs
Y5 are really enjoying their art lesson with Miss Hide, today we’re refreshing our memories of primary, secondary and tertiary colours before we start our block on painting. We are going to be looking at the work of American artist Chuck close this half term.
What an amazing turnout for the launch of our family reading project. Children from nursery to Year 2 will build a library of amazing books over the course of this year to develop a love of stories. Each half term, every child will be gifted 2 story books to take home and cherish
Y6 have worked hard on creating a narrative based on the images and dialogue from @davidjalmond’s fabulous book ‘The Dam’. We also tried paint some pictures in the style of Levi Pinfold. We hope we’ve done this amazing book and artwork justice!
Willow and Frankie love their morning walks with our House Captains. 😃🦮
Year 5 and 6 loved visiting all eight planets for World Space Week last week, completing an experiment for each planet. Year 4 used their knowledge of circuits to produce some amazing constellations too. #WorldSpaceWeek #womeninspace @NASA @maddiemoate
